Brady Cole

Brady Cole has taken the full reins of the SMWC men's soccer program. Following the 2023 season as co-head coach, Cole has been named the lone head coach of the program, Associate Vice President of Athletics Kevin Lanke announced Tuesday.

Cole, a West Terre Haute native, made the move to SMWC last spring following a successful tenure as West Vigo High School boys' soccer coach. His career record of 54-29-6 at West Vigo ranks No. 1 in school history, highlighted by sectional championships in 2019 and 2021.

Lanke is excited for the future of the program with Cole guiding it. SMWC women's soccer coach Ron Kiernicki, who served as men's co-head coach in 2023, will continue to assist the men's program and serve as director of soccer operations for the college.

"Brady learned a significant amount about men's college soccer during the 2023 season, and I look forward to his passion and enthusiasm leading the Pomeroys into a successful future. I also want to thank Coach Kiernicki for his contributions in the co-head coach role this year and his willingness to stay on with the program as an assistant for the foreseeable future," said Lanke.

Cole looks forward to pushing the program forward with a large contingent of returning players in 2024.

"The biggest change is we now have one voice," said Cole, whose first Pomeroys' season had some ups and downs, culminating with a record of 1-13-2 overall and 1-8-1 in the River States Conference.

Cole inherited a roster that included 12 freshmen mixed with a group of veterans to the program.

"I want to run the team like a family. And families don't always get along at first, but they figure it out. Hard work's going to figure this out," Cole said. "It solves a lot of problems when you wake up and have a will to work for your team and not just for yourself."

Freshman goalkeeper Harry Jackson is ready to get back to work to prepare for the 2024 season.

"Even though coach is young and we're a young team, I feel like coach brings a lot of energy and I feel like we have a lot of energy," Jackson said. "The connection's really good. We have a lot of energy. Everyone respects coach a lot. It's a nice atmosphere to be in."

Freshman Marc Valderrama, a freshman midfielder from London, is looking forward to continuing to continuing to help Cole build the program.

"Coach Cole brings the passion side," Valderrama said. "I think that helps us connect with him. We love the game. We want to play, we want to be out there all the time. He really connects with us individually and as a team. I hope we can continue to build that bond together."

The full men's soccer coaching staff, with additional personnel coming aboard beyond Cole and Kiernicki, will be announced in the coming months.
