Coach Tina Murphy began her first season at Montreat College in February 2018. The 2018 season saw successes both on the field and in the classroom for the Lady Cavaliers as the squad posted its best regular-season record since 2013, finishing the season with a total of 18 points, 11 more than the previous year. Four of their seven losses were decided by just one goal or less, with six of those matches going into double overtime.
The 2018 team was also able to accomplish a 60 percent reduction in goals against compared to the previous three years, while doubling their amount of goals for. In Appalachian Athletic Conference play, the Lady Cavs saw a 67 percent decrease in goals against while increasing scoring by 43 percent compared to the 2017 season. Coach Murphy’s team scored at least one goal in eight games out of 12 AAC matchups, an 86 percent increase from 2017 and best since 2013. The squad also recorded four shutouts in 2018, three more than in 2017.
The Lady Cavs received conference recognition during the season when freshman goalkeeper Payton Landy was named AAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 12, 2018.
In the classroom, the Lady Cavs had two players named to the Academic All-American team with perfect 4.0 GPAs. In total, 12 of the squad's 19 players earned GPAs of 3.4 or higher. The team posted an overall GPA of 3.42 with 86 percent of the student-athletes above a 3.0.
Prior to Montreat, Murphy was head coach in the Brazilian Professional league from 2008-2009, assistant coach at Division I Liberty University from 2011-2013, and head coach at NCFC Youth from 2015-2017.
Murphy holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National "C" coaching license, as well as an NCYSA Goalkeeper Certificate.
As a professional player, Murphy enjoyed a long career overseas, competing for the Brazilian 1st Division team, Santos Futebol Clube. Murphy also spent time playing professionally in England for the 1st Division Bristol Academy Football Club. When not playing soccer abroad, Murphy was in the States competing for the Charlotte Lady Eagles of the W-League from 2001-2008. She was named Charlotte's captain in her second year with the club and retained the role until retirement, while twice being named to the All W-League team and 3x to the All-Conference team. She is the Eagles' all-time leading goal scorer and points leader.
As a collegiate player, Murphy competed for the Univeristy of North Carolina Tarheels, and was a Parade All-American coming out of high school. During her time at UNC, the Tarheels won four National Championships and five ACC Championships. Murphy was also named to the ACC Honor Roll and Dean's List.
