William (Bill) Glass

This fall, William A. Glass will enter his 16th year coaching soccer at USC Salkehatchie. Previously he served as head soccer coach at Brewton-Parker College for five years.

“I came to soccer late in life,” Glass explains, “when I missed a meeting at the YMCA and was selected to coach my six-year-old son’s team, the Comets.”

It didn’t take long for Coach Glass to become infatuated with soccer. He signed up for a series of coaching courses and earned his badges from the United States Soccer Federation. When the opportunity came to take over as coach of a U-15 travel team, the East Cobb Rangers, he didn’t hesitate. Two Georgia Youth Soccer Association championships followed. Meanwhile the Comets were posting one undefeated season after another. When the time came for Glass to retire from his position as Vice President at GALLUP, he decided to apply for college coaching jobs. It didn’t take long for offers to come in.

Glass chose Brewton-Parker and has been coaching college soccer ever since. During the 20 years Glass has coached college his record is 218-186-24.

In 2022, the Indians went 7-6 and had four players named all-region. Glass has coached numerous all-region players, and seen many graduating sophomores leave Salkehatchie with scholarships to four-year colleges.

Glass was named NJCAA Region X Coach of the Year in 2020.

Aside from coaching soccer, Glass is a publisher author. He has two novels in print and is half-way through the third.

“I’m really excited about the new one,” Glass says, “the first two were based on personal experiences, but my current project is pure imagination.”

When not at work, or writing, Glass enjoys spending time with Bettina Linden, his wife of 39 years. She is a retired high school German teacher. Their three sons, Alex, Robert, and Gordon have all graduated from college and moved away.

Alex is a managing consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton working at the CDC in Atlanta, his wife Maggie is a nurse-practitioner at Children’s Hospital. She specializes in pediatric neurology. Robert Glass is a government relations director for CareSource and lives with his wife, Alexandra, in Indianapolis. Alexandra is a sergeant on the job with the Indianapolis Police Force. Bettina and William’s youngest child, Gordon, lives in Boston with his fiancée Lauren. He’s an attorney specializing in land use and environmental law. Lauren is a veterinarian with a vocation for exotic animals.

Nowadays, Bettina and William enjoy keeping up with their children, taking walks with their dogs, and all sorts of outdoor pursuits. And of course, soccer is always a preoccupation, whether in-season or out. Since Bettina retired last year, she has been actively involved with the Salkehatchie soccer program.

The site worked great for the tournaments I used it for. I had many coaches respond to my contacting them. The site helped me develop confidence in getting through the recruiting process.
