Evan Scheffey

Evan Scheffey will begin his ninth season at the helm of the Spartan program in the fall of 2023. He was named the York College head men's soccer coach on March 12, 2015.


The Spartans had their second ten win season under Scheffey in 2022 as York was 10-6-3 overall and 4-3-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. The Spartans went 7-3-1 at home as York advanced to the Commonwealth semifinals. The Spartans placed five players on the MAC All-Commonwealth squads. Sophomore Luke Nall was a first-team All-Commonwealth selection in addition to being an Academic All-MAC pick and a CSC Academic All-America honoree.


After losing the 2020 season to COVID and the worldwide pandemic, the Spartans got back on the field in 2021. York went 6-9-3 with a very young squad. The Spartans finished 4-4 in the MAC Commonwealth, securing the fourth seed in the league. The Spartans had four one-goal losses on the year as they were highly competitive during the year. Sophomores Tyler Howlett and Matt Zeiders both earned All-MAC Commonwealth honors. Howlett was a second team pick while Zeiders earned honorable mention accolades.


The Spartans finished 9-9-2 for the 2019 season. The Spartans had six one-goal setbacks during the season as they advanced to the CAC Semifinals before losing at #23 Christopher Newport to end the Spartans' time in the CAC. The Spartans placed three players on the All-CAC squads as Brook Addisu and Zion Friday were first team selections while Isiah Dorsey was a second team pick.


During Scheffey's fourth year, the Spartans started fast opening the year 5-2. The Spartans would fall 1-0 to perennial powerhouse Messiah before York would go unbeaten for seven straight games going 5-0-2 during that span including four shutout wins. The Spartans would cool off down the stretch dropping two of their next three headed into the CAC tournament. The Spartans did close the regular season on a high note however, drubbing CAC rival Salisbury 5-0. The Spartans would travel to Frostburg State in the first round of the conference tournament falling 3-1 to conclude the 2018 campaign with a 10-6-2 record. The 10 wins were the most in the young coaching career of Scheffey. Junior Brook Addisu was named third-team All-South Atlantic Region as well as being a first-team All-CAC selection. Senior Nathan Bilbie was also a first team All-CAC pick while junior Keith Witherell, sophomore Zion Friday, and junior Barak Amige all earned second-team honors. The five All-CAC picks were the most for a Scheffey coached team in his career.


During Scheffey's third season, the Spartans started off strong by winning the Turk Emekli DC Classic at Catholic University. York next notched a scoreless tie with Stevenson but the Green and White hit a tough stretch where they dropped six straight before ending September with a win over Marymount. The Spartans went 4-2-1 to close out the regular season before Salisbury edged York in penalty kicks in the opening round of the CAC. York finished the year 7-8-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the CAC. Sophomore Brook Addisu was a first-team All-CAC honoree while senior Chris Hobbs and freshman Zion Friday earned second-team honors.


In 2017, the Spartans struggled early, but won three of their last four regular season games before earning a win in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament over St. Mary's (Md.), avenging losses from the week before and after being bounced in the tournament in 2015 by the Seahawks. York finished 8-9-2 overall and 4-4-1 in conference. Three Spartans earned second-team All-CAC honors.


In Scheffey's debut season at the helm, York went 6-2-1 in conference play including a six-game win streak through October. The Spartans finished 9-8-2 overall, and fell in the CAC Tournament semifinals to St. Mary's (Md.) in overtime, 1-0.


Scheffey is extremely familiar with the Spartan program as he was a four-year starting defender for the Green and White from 2005-2008. He has served as the lead assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Virginia Wesleyan College since January of 2013.


Scheffey was an outstanding player and leader during his time in the Green and White. The Spartans accumulated a record of 78-5-9 during his tenure as a player in York. He was a three-time First Team All-Capital Athletic Conference player, a two-time Capital Athletic Conference champion, a three-time First Team NSCAA All-Region selection and a 2008 NSCAA Third Team All-American. The Spartans advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all four of Scheffey's seasons on the squad, including a berth in the Elite Eight in both 2006 and 2007.


Scheffey was named to the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Silver Anniversary team, recognizing him as one of the Top 25 men's soccer players in the 25 years of the CAC. In the spring of 2020, he earned induction into the York College Athletic Hall of Fame.


Not only was Scheffey a fantastic player for the Green and White, but he was also a three-year team captain for York.


He started his post-playing career with an assistant coaching position at Goucher College, a member of the Landmark Conference. In his is first year as a Gophers assistant, Goucher improved their league mark by three wins and their overall record by two wins and a tie after going 4-14 in 2010. Scheffey also spearheaded the recruiting efforts as Goucher brought in a class of 12 players from five different states.


In his second year in Towson, the Gophers had a freshman class that included a dynamic group of newcomers. One freshman led all Landmark newcomers in scoring with seven goals during the year. Not only was Scheffey active on the recruiting trail, but he also established a Goucher Men's Soccer alumni networking night, bringing current players and alumni together to create working relationships.


Scheffey then moved to Virginia Wesleyan in early 2013 where he immersed himself in the program. The Marlins finished 16-5-1 overall and 9-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in Scheffey's first year on the VWC staff. Those numbers were a dramatic improvement over the 2012 season; a campaign in which Virginia Wesleyan went 8-10-2 overall and 6-5 in the league. It was the sixth best turnaround in Division III men's soccer in 2013. He was responsible for recruiting and coaching the 2013 ODAC Rookie-of-the-Year Kyle Fisher.


In Scheffey's second year, the Marlins went 11-4-4 overall including a 7-2-2 mark in the ODAC. The team GPA was over 3.0 for the third consecutive semester as 14 players earned Dean's List honors.


"We are going to relentlessly pursue the highest standards in every facet of our program," states Scheffey. "These expectations not only include winning at the highest level on the field but also being recognized and respected for our hard work in the classroom while being an integral part of the surrounding community."


Scheffey also has extensive club coaching experience, as he was a U-16 and U-18 head coach with FC York from October of 2009 through January 2013. He was also the head coach of Beach FC in Virginia Beach from May 2013 until March of 2015.


Scheffey owns an NSCAA National Diploma as he completed that with Distinguished Pass. He lives in Lancaster with his wife, Krista, and their three children.

John Barton

John Barton enters his 11th year on the York College Spartan men's soccer staff.


Barton played collegiate soccer at Shippensburg University from 1994-1997 and earned both a Bachelors degree in psychology and a Masters degree in Secondary Education counseling.


Barton coached nine years of high school soccer in the York area at West York Area High School where he compiled a 115-40-11 record and earned the YAIAA Coach of the Year three times during his Bulldog tenure. Additionally, Barton coached an FC York's boy’s premier team from 2009-11.


In addition to working with the Spartans, Barton is also a middle school counselor at West York Area Middle School.


Barton lives in York with his wife, Amy, and children Dylan, Alexis, and Jacob.
