Nate Wiley

Nate Wiley begins his 18th season as head coach of the SUNY Geneseo women's soccer program after taking over the position in January of 2006. He enters the 2023 season with a record of 186-83-36 (.669), while guiding the Knights to six SUNYAC Championship titles and NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in 2009, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022.

Geneseo rattled off its fourth SUNYAC Championship in five years in 2022, defeating Cortland on the road in penalty kicks. The Knights were led by five First-Team All-SUNYAC honorees, as well as three additional Second and Third-Team All-SUNYAC awards. Geneseo finished with a 11-4-4 overall record, and 7-1-1 mark in SUNYAC action. The Knights season was highlighted by recording 11 shutouts, and making their fifth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.


After missing out on the 2020 season due to the COVID pandemic, Geneseo came back with a mission on 2021. Led by United Soccer Coaches All-Region selections Julia Dell Aquila '22, Hannah Sullivan '22 and Liv Raucci '24, the Knights finished with a 16-3-1 record, earning its third SUNYAC Championship in four seasons and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Sullivan, Mackenzie Griffin '22 and Sarah Dunnigan '23 were each named CoSIDA Academic All-District selections while Sullivan also earned United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America honors. Wiley and assistant coach Paige Smith were named the 2021 SUNYAC Coaching Staff of the Year as well.


In 2019, Geneseo posted a 15-4-1 mark, including 10 shutouts as senior back Taylor Clar '20 was named SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Year to lead seven Knights selected to the All-SUNYAC teams. Wiley led the team to its fifth-consecutive SUNYAC finals appearance, and despite Geneseo falling to Cortland in the SUNYAC Championship, the Knights received the program's first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament, marking the team's third-straight trip to the big dance. Clar became just the second player in program history to be named an All-Region selection four times, joining Grace Dunnigan '20 and Hannah Sullivan '22 as United Soccer Coaches All-Region selections.


The Knights earned their second-consecutive SUNYAC Championship in 2018, posting a 14-4-1 mark on their way to another NCAA Tournament appearance. Geneseo defeated Plattsburgh, 2-0, in the SUNYAC Semifinals and downed Cortland, 1-0, in the championship to hoist the trophy for the fourth time in program history. Geneseo traveled to Williams College to face Stevens Tech in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling in double-overtime, 1-0, to the Ducks. Emily Janiszewski '19 was named D3soccer.com Goalkeeper of the Year and earned United Soccer Coaches' All-America and Scholar All-America honors. Rachel Walsh '19 and Taylor Clar '20 joined Janiszewski as Scholar All-Americans while Walsh, Clar, Janiszewski and Caitie Cunningham '19 each earned United Soccer Coaches All-Region nods, the most All-Region selections in the same season in program history.


In 2017, Geneseo posted a program record 18 wins on its way to a SUNYAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. The Knights defeated visiting Oneonta, 2-1, in the SUNYAC Semifinals and went on to defeat Plattsburgh, 4-0, in the SUNYAC Championship game to secure the third conference crown in program history. The Knights hosted the first and second round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Penn State Berks in the opening round, 2-1, in overtime, and advancing past Misericordia, 1-0, in double overtime. Geneseo fell to Johns Hopkins, 2-0, in the NCAA Tournament third round. Leah Greene '18 and Audrey Reid '18 earned All-America honors, becoming the fourth and fifth All-Americans in program history. Greene, Reid, Rachel Walsh '19 and Taylor Clar '20 were each named NSCAA All-Region selections while Emily Janiszewski '19, Domenica Piccoli '19, Jennifer Moran '19 and Ellie Gregory '21 joined them as All-Conference picks.


In 2016, the Knights finished with a 9-3-5 mark, including a 6-1-2 record in SUNYAC play. The squad blanked Oneonta, 3-0, in the semifinal round of the conference tournament, but fell to top seed Buffalo State in the finals to finish as runner-up. Leah Greene '18, Emily Green '17 and Taylor Clar '20 were each named NSCAA All-Region selections while Erin O'Connor '17, Alexa Wandy '17, Laurie Knapp '17 and Emily Janiszewski '19 joined them as SUNYAC all-stars.


Wiley garnered 2014 SUNYAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year honors after leading the Knights to a 16-3-3 record, nine wins more than 2013 and the team's best mark since the 1993 squad went 18-2 en route to the NCAA Regionals. He coached six players to All-SUNYAC honors in 2014, including the Player of the Year, midfielder Meaghan Johnston '17, and the Rookie of the Year, forward Leah Greene '18. After defeating Plattsburgh, 3-0, in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals, Wiley led the top-seeded Knights to their sixth SUNYAC Championship, defeating Cortland, 1-0.


After playing to a 3-3 draw against Frostburg State and advancing on penalty kicks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Geneseo fell to eventual national semifinalist Johns Hopkins in the second round, 3-1. The Knights held a No. 19 ranking in their final game and climbed as high as No. 17 in 2014.


A native of nearby Churchville, N.Y. and graduate of Byron-Bergen High School, Wiley spent the 2005 season as an assistant coach at Geneseo after serving as the head men's coach at Chowan (N.C.) for three seasons from 2002-04.


While at Chowan, Wiley improved the team's winning percentage for three consecutive seasons after inheriting a team that won just one contest in the two seasons prior to his arrival.


A U.S. Soccer Federation D Coaching License holder, Wiley's coaching resume' includes a three year stint as an assistant for both the women's and men's programs at Penn State-Behrend, where he helped lead the women to their first NCAA tournament appearance and the men to their first ECAC Tournament berth.


A 1999 graduate of Geneseo, Wiley was a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Northeast Region selection and a two-time All-SUNYAC defender. He played in five Empire State Games for the Western Open team, earning one silver and two bronze medals.


In addition, Wiley earned a master's degree in business administration from Penn State Behrend in 2002 and has numerous camp, clinic and club team coaching experiences.
