Matt O'Sullivan

Matt O'Sullivan is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer program in 2023.

In his first season in 2019, O'Sullivan led the Broncos to a CCAA Tournament championship, the third in CPP men's soccer history, and their fifth straight NCAA Tournament, boasting a 12-5-3 overall record and a 10-1-1 mark in conference play. His second season in 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he led the Broncos to a 14-5-4 overall record, a second-place finish in the CCAA and an appearance in the NCAA Division II national quarterfinal round.

O'Sullivan became the 11th head coach in the history of the CPP men's soccer program prior to the 2019 campaign, returning to the CCAA for the first time since he played for California State University, Bakersfield from 2003-05, winning a CCAA title before the Roadrunners later made the move to NCAA Division I.

In two years at UC Irvine as the head assistant coach, under the tutelage of former CPP head coach Yossi Raz, O'Sullivan served a vital role in turning around an Anteater program that went 8-8-3 overall in 2017 to winning the Big West Conference championship as a nationally-ranked squad at the NCAA Division I level with an 11-6-4 mark and reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament. For their efforts, the UCI coaching staff was named the Big West Conference Staff of the Year. As the lead recruiter at UCI, O'Sullivan's work was recognized by Top Drawer Soccer, which ranked the Anteaters at No. 1 in NCAA Division I for their 2019 recruiting class.

Prior to arriving in Irvine, O'Sullivan spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II powerhouse St. Edward's University. The Hilltoppers were nationally-ranked in five of his seven years of being on the sidelines, and as high as third in the country during the 2016 season. They also qualified for three straight NCAA tournaments, including being the No. 1 seed in the South Central Region in 2014 and 2016. The 2016 Hilltoppers' staff was also selected as the South Central Regional Staff of the Year by the NSCAA (now known as United Soccer Coaches).

During O'Sullivan's tenure in Austin, St. Edward's won five Heartland Conference titles with an impressive combined record of 87-31-15. They were the first Heartland Conference team ever to go undefeated in a season during 2014 and followed it up with the same feat in 2015, winning 27 straight conference games. As St. Edward's recruiting coordinator, he brought in 13 All-Americans, 26 all-region and 48 all-conference student-athletes. St. Edward's was impressive on the defensive side of the ball as they led the nation in goals-against average (0.50) in 2015 with 14 shutouts and were ranked No. 1 nationally in shutouts (15) in 2016 with 0.45 GAA.

Prior to arriving at St. Edward's in 2010, O'Sullivan started coaching college soccer at the University of the Incarnate Word, an NCAA Division II institution that won two Heartland Conference championships and made the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament with an overall record of 35-20-4 over his three seasons.

Before starting his coaching career, O'Sullivan played at California State University, Bakersfield for three seasons (2003-05) and was part of the 2004 CCAA championship team that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division II Tournament. He earned All-CCAA First Team honors after leading the Roadrunners in goals and assists in 2005. O'Sullivan scored 13 goals from the midfield and added 10 assists over his three years at CSUB, including a hat trick against defending NCAA national champion Sonoma State.

O'Sullivan, a native of Preston, England, graduated from CSU Bakersfield in 2007 with his bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, and completed his master's degree in 2009 at University of the Incarnate Word in Business Sports Management. He and his wife, Taylar, have three children.

Jose Ortega

Jose Ortega returned to the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer program as an assistant coach ahead of the 2017 season. Already on the staff when current head coach Matt O'Sullivan took charge, the 2023 campaign is Ortega's seventh back with the Broncos.

Ortega was a two-year letterwinner at Cal Poly Pomona in 2013 and 2014, starring for former CPP and current UC Irvine head coach Yossi Raz as a defensive anchor. He appeared in all 38 games the Broncos played during those two seasons, starting each one as CPP went 24-8-6 (.711) overall. Ortega earned All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) honorable mention in his first go-around in the green and gold, adding a pair of assists offensively.

As a senior for first-time CCAA Tournament champion Cal Poly Pomona, Ortega was voted by league head coaches as CPP's first-ever (and still only) CCAA Defensive Player of the Year, and was selected to the All-CCAA First Team. A unanimous All-West Region honoree, he was recognized as a second-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American. That 2014 squad broke several program records that still stand, among them for wins (17-tied), winning percentage (.900, 17-1-2) fewest goals allowed (10) and goals-against average (0.48). Ortega was the only Bronco who started every match in both 2013 and 2014, and led the squad in minutes played in each season to total 3,465.

Ortega began his collegiate playing career at El Camino College in Torrance. The Los Angeles native is a graduate of George Washington Preparatory Senior High.

Kevin McCarthy

Kevin McCarthy is in his fourth year as an assistant coach for the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team in 2023.

Added to head coach Matt O'Sullivan's staff in March 2020, McCarthy joined the Broncos after three years as assistant coach for the CSUSM men’s soccer program. In 2019, the Cougars posted a 6-8-2 overall record and a 4-4-2 CCAA record in a season shortened two games by wildfires around Sonoma State and Cal State LA. It was CSUSM's second time finishing with a .500 record in conference play since joining the league in 2015. The Cougars' win over No. 25 Fresno Pacific to begin the season was the program's first win over a ranked opponent since 2016.

After starting the 2018 season with a 6-0 record, the Cougars made history by breaking into the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 Poll for the first time as an NCAA member as the team took a No. 19 ranking. The team ended the season with an overall record of 8-7-2 (4-6-2 CCAA).

During his four years with Frostburg State, McCarthy helped the Bobcats to 34 wins, including a pair of CAC Tournament and two ECAC Tournament appearances.

Frostburg emerged as one of the top defensive teams in the nation in his final two seasons. In 2016, the Bobcats finished eighth in the nation in save percentage (.883) after ranking second nationally (.909) following the 2014 campaign.

In his first year, McCarthy helped lead the Bobcats to a 13-7 overall record that included a perfect 9-0 record at home. Frostburg advanced to the CAC Tournament semifinals and won the FSU Tournament, both for the third-straight season.

Prior to his time at FSU, McCarthy had several coaching stints at the collegiate level. In 2012, McCarthy served as the men’s and women’s assistant coach at Ave Maria University. In 2011-12, he was an assistant coach at Manhattanville College. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, helping with team academics and assisted in event management. The Valiants finished 15-4-1 and appeared in the NCAA Tournament.

McCarthy received his first collegiate assistant position at William Smith College in the spring of 2011. He designed and assisted with training sessions for the women’s soccer team.

A 2011 graduate of Hobart College, McCarthy served as team captain and led the Statesmen to a 52-15-12 overall record with three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree and garnered All-Liberty League Second Team honors as a senior in 2010.

In 2013, McCarthy played for and served as team captain of the Cape Coral Hurricanes of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).

McCarthy received his United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Diploma in January 2013 and MBA at Frostburg State in 2015. He and his wife Sarah were married in September of 2021, and reside with their dog Kono in San Clemente, Calif.

The site worked great for the tournaments I used it for. I had many coaches respond to my contacting them. The site helped me develop confidence in getting through the recruiting process.
